CardioSignal Inc strengthens expertise in AgeTech and joins AgeTech Collaborative™ from AARP®
To break barriers in the scalability and accessibility of remote cardiac care technology among older adults, CardioSignal has become a portfolio company of AgeTech Collaborative™ from AARP® after completing its prestigious accelerator program. Joining the network will help gain key market insights and build growth in the rapidly growing AgeTech market.
The CardioSignal technology aims to make earlier detection of heart diseases more accessible to people through their smartphones. In the hands of older adults and caregivers, a smartphone-based strategy has significant potential to provide preventative cardiovascular care, enabling older adults to lead healthier lives in their homes for longer.
“We see tremendous value in offering this technology as a population health strategy for older adults. Using a smartphone as a measuring device removes a key barrier in adopting and adhering to a regular monitoring routine and does not require any additional devices. In our annual user surveys, 93% of people above 60 have found our technology very easy to use,” states Tero-Pekka Alastalo (MD, PhD), President of CardioSignal Inc.
According to AARP, as much as 68% of people 50-plus do not think technology is designed with their age group in mind. However, this population is expected to spend $120.2 billion on technology annually in 2030 (1). The average American spends roughly 5 hours a day on their phone (2).
“Smartphones are everywhere. The future of care delivery means reorienting healthcare where the users are. For care delivery, the smartphone ecosystem offers unparalleled opportunities for engagement, efficiency, and better access to care,” Alastalo sums up.
The share of Americans that own a smartphone is 85%. Smartphone ownership has exploded in the 65+ age group over the past decade and now stands at 61%, nearly five times more than in 2012 (3-4).
The CardioSignal technology utilizes the sensitive motion sensors of a smartphone to measure cardiac motion when the smartphone is placed on the chest for one minute. In clinical studies, this method, gyrocardiography, has been found effective for detecting signs of heart disease, such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Removing the need for additional devices enables unlimited scalability to advance earlier detection among the growing number of individuals with cardiovascular disease factors.
